Food in Singapore

For the next 2 weeks, I’m going on a trip around Australia with the funnest people I know. So while I’m away, I’ve prepared for you a trip from last month– out of Australia and into Singapore. Where best to start off with than FOOD? Alas, Food in Singapore!

Devotion to durians seem to have caused a bit of public disruption.

Singapore has four official languages – English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil. This diversity is reflected in the Singaporean cuisine, a delicious amalgamation of styles and techniques.

The cultural diversity is definitely one thing I didn’t expect. The food is also quite different from the Asian food I’m used to, but delicious nonetheless.

Thanks to Kenley for being a great food coach, and AO for the Malay translation.

Singaporean food

Non-gelatin jelly, and taro dessert (I think, can't remember what I ate anymore)
Business owner with his non-gelatin jelly (!), and a taro dessert (?)

Have you eaten?

Peranakan cuisine
Peranakan cuisine, a fusion of Chinese, Indonesian, and Malaysian. Yes, some of these are meat dishes that Kenley had.
Roti Prata
Kenley and server. Milo Dinosaur drink, and roti prata. Sometimes, I think I have an Indian stomach. Feed me more of this food!
Traditional Singaporean breakfast and foods.
Vegetarian version of Singaporean cuisine (top row and bottom right). Traditional Singaporean breakfast – Kaya toast, Kopi (Coffee), and soft boiled eggs (not in the photo montage… because I ate too quickly). Bottom left: savoury rice pudding.
Hawker centre food
Food from a hawker centre: open-air complex, food stalls, cheap eats.

What’s your favourite fusion dish?

P.S. My Singaporean friend Adrian confirms that chewing gum is banned in Singapore. He recommends swallowing the gum if you get caught. :P

  1. “What’s your favourite fusion dish?” I feel like it’s been a while since I’ve had fusion fare. Is that even possible in Hongcouver?
