Vegetarians Eat Out in Japan: Narita

Being a vegetarian is tough in Japan. To eat out is extra difficult. I can’t really choose a dish out of the menu because Japanese use dashi (stock that is usually made with fish), shrimp, bonito flakes (dried fish flakes) or other seafood for dishes that appear vegetarian.

So far, I have 2 solutions.

1. Seek out vegetarian restaurants

Haruka found a restaurant called Easy Life Cafe. A little bit on the salty side, but nice nonetheless.

Eat out with Haruka, veggie-style.
Gluten nuggets (I don’t think they were actually called nuggets on the menu), tofu patty burger. Yum!

2. Eat out at a conveyor belt sushi restaurant

While it may seem that fish is everywhere, I do have some choices:

  • inari sushi
  • eggplant
  • edamame beans
  • tempura sweet potato
  • agedashi tofu (without the bonito flakes)
  • some of them have mayo and corn sushi

I have no photos of the veggie dishes… I was hungry.

Eat out: kaiten sushi!
Conveyor belt sushi (kaiten sushi). My first time!
Nigiri sushi, not for vegetarians.
Me ogling at them sushi go round and round, round and round. :)

Are you also a travelling vegetarian? How do you survive out there?

  1. I’ve had conveyer belt sushi in vancouver before..
but they’re no longer around la.
Really miss it.. cos it’s just fun and appetizing to see food going round n round.

    1. I know… it’s fun to pick up dishes from the conveyor belt. Plus, it’s affordable here in Japan such that we can order many dishes and not break the bank!

  2. Love conveyor belt sushi!

I stayed up at Mount Koya (you can look it up), and they served vegetarian kaiseki. It’s a buddhist temple / monastery, that’s why.
