Miyajima, Torii Gate At Sea

miyajima-01

Miyajima Island houses the Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is very accessible from Hiroshima. I use the JR Seishun 18 Pass* to get there, and it allows me to take the JR ferry across as well!

*Seishun 18 Pass provides 5 days of unlimited JR rides. They do not need to be consecutive days, but is available on select periods only. It targets high school students to use it during their holidays but is available to everyone.

Seaside living. How nice.

Other than Nara, deers also roam freely here. Though, I don’t see anyone selling biscuits for feeding.

Huge wooden rice scoop. Miyajima is known for their craftsmanship of rice scoops.

I also see a lot of custard filled pastries.

Grilled oysters.

I like how Japanese will find every/any way to promote their goods. Sign here says “Obama president likes green tea ice cream very much!”

The torii gate by the sea. There is another one in Ibaraki as well, not sure which one is more famous. I think the Ibaraki one looks nicer from photos I see online. What do you think?

Itsukushima Shrine. There is an admission fee to go in but I choose not to. One can get a better photo of the torii gate from inside.

Five-storey pagoda

Momijidani Park is supposed to look fabulous with the autumn leaves. If you’re there during autumn, please take photos and share them with me!

I had a late start going to Miyajima and so I conclude that a half day is sufficient for exploring the island. If you plan to go to the aquarium and hike up the mountain as well, you’ll want more time.
