This post is dedicated to Joa, who is already a vegetarian, to Miss C, who is recently vegetarian, and to Mom, who I know one day will also become vegetarian. I’d also like to thank Facebook friends for naming this post. Credits to Adrian B. for this one.
The title can easily be “For the love of animals”, but I would sound like an animal lover and activist. If you were my housemate, you’d probably agree that it doesn’t suit me. I lack the ability to show affection for my two canine housemates. It’s not that I dislike animals, I’m just not obsessed. This is especially true after Monday when one of them pooped-ran and a piece of his feces flung onto my leg.
I know, right? How the *bananas* does that happen?!
The Rage!
Breathe In.
Exhale.
Excuse me, I digress.
…So, to be diplomatic, this post is about the love of veggies (or vegies) and not about imposing beliefs on people. It is about sharing my vegetarian restaurant finds in Melbourne.
I’m trying to avoid going to the same restaurant twice. Hence, the rating will be based on my urgency to go back:
- yes (it’s THAT good)
- someday (but not until I’ve tried other places)
- maybe, or
- never
Now, to feed your hunger for reviews…
My Current Fav Vegetarian Restaurant Is…
Moroccan Soup Bar
Yum, just yum. (If you don’t like eggplant, you will here.)
Cuisine: | Moroccan, Middle Eastern |
Location: | Fitzroy North |
Go Again?: | Definitely– anytime, anyday. Saturday actually. |
Vegetarian Breakfast
I could write a whole new post on brunch places, but my memory is short and there are way too many brunch places to remember. If you want brunch recommendations, follow Boss on Instagram (@_amill3r_).
Little Big Sugar Salt (non-veg)
Though non-veg, I really like their Açai granola. It deserves a mention.
Cuisine: | Breakfast Café, Vegan-Friendly |
Location: | Richmond |
Go Again?: | Someday |
Smith & Daughters
The burrito and nachos are good. The eggless omelette dish and coffees, though, do not satisfy my friends.
Cuisine: | Latin American, Southern/Soul, Vegetarian |
Location: | Fitzroy |
Go Again?: | Maybe |
Vegetarian Fast-Food Burger Chain
Lord of the Fries
Did I mention 100% vegetarian?! Panic attack. I have options!! Must learn to make decisions…
Cuisine: | Vegetarian Burger Chain |
Location: | Multiple |
Go Again?: | Maybe (haven’t tried their fries yet!) |
Vegetarian Comfort Foods
Trippy Taco
I have tacos. Karl has burrito and something else (quesadillas?). The tacos are good, but next time, I’ll be sure to head straight for the burrito(s).
Cuisine: | Mexican, Vegetarian |
Location: | Fitzroy |
Go Again?: | Yes |
Vegie Bar
This is one restaurant I keep hearing about. My verdict? It is not outstanding. I would like to give it another go someday. I hear their desserts are good.
Cuisine: | Vegetarian |
Location: | Fitzroy |
Go Again?: | Someday |
Lentil As Anything
It’s pay-as-you-feel. Clever concept. I kind of like the grungy ambiance. The food is decent.
Cuisine: | Vegetarian, Buffet |
Location: | Abbotsford (Multiple) |
Go Again?: | Maybe |
Asian Vegetarian
Jinda Thai (non-veg)
It’s a non-veg restaurant, but the tofu dish is delicious. My non-veg friends like (love) the food also.
Cuisine: | Thai |
Location: | Richmond |
Go Again?: | Yes |
Loving Hut (version Melbourne)
Apparently there are Loving Huts all over the world. This one is Thai and Vietnamese influenced. Sweet lovin’ food.
Cuisine: | Asian, Vegetarian |
Location: | Richmond |
Go Again?: | Someday |
Kong (non-veg)
This can easily fall into comfort foods too. The tofu bun wraps (?) are bite-sized and delicious.
Cuisine: | Japanese / Korean BBQ |
Location: | Richmond, and a pop up in CBD |
Go Again?: | Someday |
Madame K’s Vegetarian
I don’t remember it well, but that probably means it didn’t stand out, yeah?
Cuisine: | Thai |
Location: | Fitzroy |
Go Again?: | Maybe |
The Fine Dining Experience
Woodland House (non-veg)
Woodland House features a produce-based menu. The service is excellence; the food is great. I have fond memories of their bread and of the great times spent with friends. This is where I celebrated my 30th.
Cuisine: | International, Modern, Fine-Dining |
Location: | Prahan |
Go Again?: | Recommend it, yes, but, no, I will unlikely go again because it’s expensive, more like a once off. |
And, of course, to top it off with dessert…
Raw Trader
Been here twice. It is a nice experiment, but I still like my non-raw sweets.
Cuisine: | Raw desserts |
Location: | CBD |
Go Again?: | Maybe |
Where to next?
Shared via Princess, my list of vegetarian restaurants to try (in no particular order):
- Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery
- New Kum Den
- TOFWD (organic food and wine deli) – I’ve actually been here for Dandelion Tea, not food. Reminds me of Chrysanthemum tea.
- Vapiano
- Green Press
- Divine Realm Vegie Delight
- Spud bar
- Overdosa
- Crossways – I’ve been to their counterpart, Govindas, in Perth. It was good.
- Roll’d

Thank you for thinking of me when you think of vegetarian food! Now, how about eating vegetarian when you think of me?! Let’s go!
From your review and posts,I pick the Jinda Thai – that dish looks amazing and so do the condiments. I also want to try the tofu bun at Kong—can we find something similar here? I’m sure I would love Moroccan Soup Bar as much as you do.
I just worked up an appetite reading “V” for Vegetarian!
