That’s how I feel about my recent hiking meetups. They have been positive experiences and great opportunities to meet new people. They are, of course, different from speed dating. I meet both women and men, singles and partnered people. We are there to enjoy a good hike/walk, and nature.
How is it like speed dating? We’re all open to making friends. Most people don’t know one another so it’s easy to chat up a conversation. Is this your first hike? What do you do? Are you from here (Melbourne)? Etc.
Throughout the hike, the group leader will point out something peculiar (like kangaroos or funny-looking funghi) or may steer us off the beaten path (going down a slope to the waterside, or side-track to a hidden altar).
These intermissions break up the conversation you have with your current walking buddy, some shuffling happens, and then you start conversation with the next closest person. Like speed dating, but not.
