Vegetarian Food in Osaka

For quick meals I buy nigiri sushi (plum or seaweed), inari sushi, or an egg sandwich from convenience stores (konbini) – Lawson, Family Mart, or 7Eleven. Other times, I cook for myself at my AirBNB accommodation.

Here are some of the vegetarian meals I had in Osaka. Some restaurants are vegetarian-friendly that offer vegetarian food and are not exclusively vegetarian, see Type.

Dense green tea mousse cake, cappuccino.

Satisfying :)

Owner is a friendly older man who spoke some English. He explains to me how to eat the dish and even took a photo of me. Perhaps I’ll be on his display board in the future.

Top left: rice gruel, a watered down multigrain rice stew. Scoop some into the bowl, add seasoning – salt, sesame, and this other herb thing. Right: pickled veg, ginger, deep-fried yam and other vegetables.

Camp Curry

Location:〒530-0001 Osaka Prefecture, Osaka, 北区梅田3−1−1 エキマルシェ大阪 EKI MARCHE OSAKA
Type
: Vegetarian-friendly
Meal Ordered: Vegetarian rice gruel
Cost: ¥1000-1100

I meet up with Carmen to eat at this curry restaurant. It takes us each 30 mins to find. It is located at the Osaka Train Station, Basement Floor, around the train gates, in the Eki Marche shopping mall. Best to ask the information staff for directions. Parts of the train station does not have good Wi-Fi reception.

My green vegetable curry.

I love how food bloggers describe food as piping hot, so I will too. This curry is piping hot. I don’t know how the cooks manage to keep their cool in the kitchen, which was directly in front of us. Very cosy, food is alright. I wish there is more protein in my dish.

Shokudou Vegan
パプリカ食堂ヴィーガン

Location: 〒550-0013 大阪府大阪市西区新町 1丁目9−9 アリビオ新町 1F
Type: Vegan
Meal ordered: Soy meat karaage set
Cost: ¥1820 (includes ¥300 seating charge for dinner)

I’m not aware of the seating charge for dinner so it is a bit on the pricey side. Well-fed and enjoyed the meal, though.

Hipster atmosphere. I like how Japanese restaurants are friendly for solo eaters. Small table for me in an obscure corner. One negative: there are mosquitoes under the tables and they bit me 3-4 times :(

My tofu karaage meal. Tasty!

Solviva

Type: Vegetarian-friendly
Meal ordered: Vegetable Spaghetti

I don’t usually eat onions, but I try this one. All the vegetables are so sweet and empowering. I am a happy camper.

Options

There are a lot of options in Osaka, but somewhat scattered around the city. One thing I notice when I go to these restaurants is that the ratio of foreigners to locals balances out, sometimes more foreigners than locals. Then again, if you pick up a travel guide or search on TripAdvisor, any restaurant listed on there are more likely to receive more foreigners.

:)
