Vegetarian’s Refuge

Kyoto is a vegetarian’s refuge. With the numerous Buddhist temples in town, comes with it lot of vegetarian restaurants. Here is my first meal in Kyoto:

The lunch special for ¥1600 at VegOut, comes with a view of the canal. Delicious!

Gion

Gion 祇園 (pronounced gi as in “geese” and on as in “on/off”) is the famous geisha district of Kyoto. The streets are lined with old buildings and nicely paved roads.

The main street

The side street. It’s funny how the tourists don’t wander into these streets. Very good photo ops here for selfies, etc.

I did not know this but the female entertainer in Kyoto is called Geiko, and an apprentice is called Meiko, whereas in Tokyo, she is called Geisha and Hangyoku.

I am lucky to see one pass by. She walks briskly though, to avoid tourists.

And another.

Kamo River

Walking along the Kamo River, I see cranes fishing.

This one caught more than a couple fish in the few minutes I watched.
